Lunches

A recent lunch: On the left, Jonah has a veggie baloney sandwich (with pickle, cheese, and lettuce), sliced pears, sliced cucumbers, pita chips, and an organic gogurt. On the right, Oona has a veggie baloney sandwich (hold the cheese), sliced pears, sliced cucumbers, pirate booty, and an organic gogurt.

2nd grade letter

Dear Mama. We had the forst Day of Sciyincs. We lornD adeowt solids in scihyincs.
From Jonah

Translation: We had the first day of Science. We learned about solids in Science. From, Jonah.

I can see that his spelling and communication is getting better and better. You know as well as I do how everything else is going. I don't get any additional information beyond the letters because Jonah is a closed book upon questioning about his 2nd grade experiences. I'm looking forward to the Math Literacy Center of which I am the coordinator. I have to find 5 parent volunteers for every Friday to help the kids with Math. I can't wait to get into the classroom!!

The second 2nd grade letter

Here's what his teacher, Tam, has to say about it:
I devote the first weeks of school to creating a community that will be a safe learning environment for everyone. By the end of September, we will create and sign our year long Community Promise that will reflect our commitment to each other and to our learning together. This social emotional curriculum continues throughout the year, integrated amongst our academic curriculum.

When I asked Jonah what a community was he said:
It's a group of people who work together.

Delightful Patches

I forgot to mention the patches that I sewed onto the lunchboxes. Jonah's patch is a yellow submarine and Oona got a Chococat.

Laptop Lunches

An example of mine and Adam's lunch creations this week:

A bagel with cream cheese (with capers for Oona), sliced plums, carrots and dried apricots, and something crunchy (pita chips for Jonah and cheese cruchies for Oona).

My themes will be weekly as my ingredients correspond to my latest grocery shop. Next week will have pears and sandwiches. This weeks lunches have come back almost completely eaten. Either they are starved to death or they actually like what I put in there!

Jonah lost his first tooth!!

Jonah has been pointing out his wiggly tooth for some time. When it didn't get a big reaction from me or Adam, he insisted, 'But Mama, this is so exciting for me!!'. As time went on, the tooth got wigglier and wigglier. It finally fell out today.

Here's the letter that he wrote to the tooth fairy:
Dear tooth Fairy,
You can'T TaKe MY tooth, But you can LooK at It.

Jonah's 2nd Grade Letter

Here is what Jonah wrote to me after his first week at school:

Translation for those who are not used to 2nd grade spelling:
Dear Mom, I thought that 2nd grade is awesome! I liked lunch. I made a magnit. It was fun! Tam read us a story about a dog that is trying to make his owner . . .

He typically keeps me hanging, especially when he describes anything about school. He tells me that he will finish this letter later. Meanwhile, notice that he says he liked his lunch! I wonder if laptop lunches had anything to do with it. Next week I will post my lunch creations.

Wait a minute - it's the first day of school!

I thought that I had it all together. I woke the kids up early. Made them lunch and carefully placed it in their brand new laptop lunch boxes. Fed them breakfast. Got them dressed. The only problem was that I didn't rush through it all; I took my time enjoying every minute of getting ready for the first day of school. I looked at my watch and I realized that SCHOOL STARTED FIVE MINUTES AGO!!! Oh my god. I ran those kids out of the house so fast, they didn't get a chance to brush their teeth. They were so confused, 'but Mama, aren't we going to brush our teeth?' NO!!! GET IN THE CAR NOW!!

Traffic was terrible and we were half an hour late. All my visions of walking Jonah into his classroom. Greeting his teacher with big smiles, were all gone. So I didn't get any pictures of Jonah. I did manage to get this picture of Oona on her first day. Luckily, she still goes to Playmates which is very laid back. They didn't notice that we were late at all.
